6 Checkpoints for Autumn Plumbing Maintenance

With autumn fast approaching, it’s important to know how to care for your plumbing in the fall. Here are some of our best tips here at Same Day Service for keeping your pipes in great shape as the weather cools off:

Check in with Your Appliances

Once each season, check your home’s appliances that use water for leaks. Check your:

  • Dishwasher
  • Refrigerator
  • Washing machine

Cover Exterior Faucets

As the weather cools the potential for freezing in your home’s outdoor faucets increases. Shut off the water supply to these outlets and cover each faucet properly to prevent damage from freezing. This includes sprinkler systems, which should be turned off, drained, and covered for the season when not in use.

Keep Things Warm

The interior of your home should always be kept above 55 degrees during the winter to prevent your pipes from freezing. Even if you are going to be out of your home for an extended period, budget and allow for keeping your heat turned on high enough during your absence to allow for this temperature to be maintained. Replacing your plumbing and cleaning up damage from a frozen, burst pipe is much more expensive than the cost of heating your home!

Cut the Fat in Holiday Cooking

Many holiday dishes such as roast beef and ham are high in fat, and you may be tempted to pour excess fat down the drain in your kitchen sink. Instead, pour fat into a disposable receptacle and throw it away once it cools and solidifies. This will prevent clogs and damage to your pipes caused by draining fat into your sink.

Give Your Sump Pump a Once-Over

For homeowners with a sump pump, your system should be inspected twice a year. Cleaning should be performed during these inspections as well. This will prevent both leaks and clogs in the system, which can cause extensive and costly flooding should your pump freeze.

Warm Up Your Water Heater

Maintaining your water heater during cold weather will prevent freezing and damage to your unit. Wrap your heater in an insulated blanket when fall begins and drain sediment from the unit to prevent rust and damage to pipes.
